Life, Crafts, Music, Diets, and Cooking

Today, I filled out my student teaching application -- scary stuff.  In a way, though, it made me feel a little proud of myself.  I mean, I've completed 140 hours of schooling, have a GPA of 3.56, and I'm graduating with honors.  I apply for graduation by June 1st.  All is well and good, but it scares me, to be honest...

Valentine's Day is fast approaching and I really wish I could share my gift for Zach!  I would if I knew he did not read this.  I will definitely take pictures and post it when I give it to him, though.  It's all hand-made, too.

Oh a whim, I went on eBay searching for a violin.  I've wanted to learn how to play a violin for a while, but they are pretty expensive and I don't know of anyone who could teach me how to play.  When I got on eBay, I took it as a sign because I found a violin for $45 brand new and with everything with it (minus the shoulder cushion, which isn't completely necessary).  It should be here tomorrow!  I'm so excited.  I'm going to try to teach myself through various YouTube videos and websites.  It seems I've taught myself a lot lately.

So, Zach and I have started a diet (approximately January 9th).  I began by just watching what I ate, but soon he showed me an awesome app he had for his phone called MyFitnessPal.  It's basically a calorie counter with a huge database of foods; it also has a barcode scanner where the barcode looks up the food.  It's really useful and adds a sense of accountability because of its ease.  Not only that, but it keeps track of your weight whenever you log it.  At the end of the day it says "If every day were like today, you would weigh X in 5 weeks!"  So far, it says I will have dropped a total of 20 pounds in a little over a month from now.  So far, I have lost 7 pounds.

I don't know if I've mentioned it before, but I am a vegetarian, which can make it hard to find diet foods that aren't salad.  Not only that, but I do not like mushrooms, which is a large part of most vegetarian diets.  Luckily, I stumbled across an awesome dieting website with a lot of recipes for different types of lifestyles...Including vegetarian. Happyness~!  The websites is 3 Fat Chicks on a Diet, which the name alone made me have to visit it.  I will include some of the recipes I have tried so far.

 Veggie Calzones
Ingredients:
3/4 cup halved and thinly sliced zucchini
3/4 cup sliced, fresh mushrooms* (I changed mine to a few baby carrots, sliced)
1/2 cup sweet red pepper, chopped
1/4 cup sliced green onions
1/2 cup Roma tomato slices* (This was not in the original recipe, we thought it would add a little something)
1/4 teaspoon garlic salt
1/4 teaspoon dried basil
1 10-ounce can refrigerated pizza crust
1 cup low fat mozzerella cheese
1 egg white, beaten

Directions:
Heat oven to 425 degrees. Spray cookie sheet with non-stick cooking spray. In bowl, combine mushrooms/carrots, zucchini, pepper, tomatos and onions. Sprinkle with garlic salt and basil and mix well. Unroll dough and place on cookie sheet. Roll into a 14 inch square and cut into 4 pieces. Place 1/4 cup of cheese on each square and spread to within 1/2 inch of edge. Top each with 1/4 of vegetable mixture. Fold dough over in half and press edges with fork to seal. Brush each pastry with egg white. Cut 2 or 3 slits in top of each pastry to allow steam to escape. Bake at 425 degrees for 12-15 minutes or until golden brown.  (250 calories per serving)

Rice Crust Pizza
Ingredients:
3 cups cooled brown rice, cooked with a pinch of turmeric powder
1 egg
2 tablespoons chopped fresh basil, divided
1 1/2 teaspoons fresh thyme leaves, divided
1 tablespoon olive oil
1 medium onion, chopped
2 garlic cloves, minced
3 cups chopped plum tomatoes
Salt, to taste
Freshly ground black pepper, to taste
3/4 cup shredded reduced-fat mozzarella cheese
1 tablespoon grated Romano cheese

Directions
Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Spray an 11-inch pizza pan or cookie sheet with cooking spray.
Combine rice with egg, half the basil and 1/2 teaspoon thyme. Season with salt and pepper, if desired. Mound rice in center of prepared pan. Cover rice with plastic wrap. Using your fingers, pat and shape rice into 10 1/2-inch circle about 1/2-inch thick, making a rim around edge. Lift away plastic wrap.
Pre-bake the rice crust 10 minutes. Remove from the oven and cool on a rack to room temperature.
Meanwhile, in a medium skillet, heat oil over medium-high heat until hot. Add onion, bell pepper and garlic. Sauté until soft, about 4 minutes. Add tomatoes. Cook, stirring occasionally, until tomato juices evaporate, about 12 minutes. Stir in remaining basil and thyme. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
When pizza crust is cool, sprinkle half the mozzarella over it. Cover cheese with the tomato mixture. Top with remaining mozzarella and sprinkle Romano cheese over it.
Bake until cheese is bubbly, 15 to 18 minutes. Cool the pizza on a rack until comfortably hot to eat. Serve immediately. (160 calories per serving)

Productivity!

Despite how the year began, I still have hope.  I say this because within the first ten days of the year, I had already cried so much that my eyes were swollen the next day due to fights; however, as school has begun I feel a sense of regularity restored to my life.  To be honest, for the entire duration of the winter break, I was in front of a computer screen playing World of Warcraft.  But alas, now it's back to 8 a.m. classes and homework assignments (that I have already put off).

I have hope for the year because of my sense of motivation and productivity.  For example, I only had one class today that ended at 9:20, so around ten I made it to the school gym -- which is absolutely amazing and free for full time students -- and worked out with a friend on the elliptical machines for about half a mile (I'll be honest, I wasn't really paying attention to time).  She had errands to run, so I decided to stay.  Ashlie has a yoga class during this time frame, so I was killing time until she got there.  Around noon, I finally discovered that she, too, was running errands.  While that means that I spent the better part of two hours by myself, it also means that I stayed at the gym for two hours.  I admit that I did take breaks and I was not nearly as strenuous on myself as I should have been, I know that I need to work up my stamina so that I don't kill myself.  I ended up going about three miles combined on the elliptical and the indoor track.  Tuesday, though, may be a different story entirely as I saw an interesting class that I would like to take called Piloxing, which is a combination of pilaties and boxing, and Ashlie wanted me to take a pilaties class with her.  Not only have I been to the gym, but Zach and I started dieting this week.  Well, maybe I should clarify that I started dieting this week -- at the end of the second day, he had stopped for Hardee's and Taco Bell for lunch and dinner respectively.  I have been pretty good so far; if ever I go out, I try to get a salad or something that I know has fewer calories.

Why this sudden health kick?  I'll be honest, costuming has a lot to do with it.  I come up with these great concepts or see costumes that would be perfect...on a skinny girl.  While I do want to lose weight for every day purposes, it would be great to pull off a somewhat skimpy costume now and again or not be embarrassed to wear shorts in public.  Another possibly embarrassing statement would be that when I was on the elliptical and started feeling tired, I would think of Heather's amazing steampunk costume and tell myself, "No.  You want to be able to pull off an outfit like that, don't you?  Stop being a wimp!"  So I will try to keep track of how much weight I lose and periodically post it on here.  That will be a "pounds lost" number, not an "I weigh this much" number, mind you.

It was finally cold enough to wear the scarf that Zach got me for my birthday!  I was so excited!  When he got home from school, around 4 p.m. or so, it started snowing.  He said that I would never really wear the scarf, so I made a picture to show him that I did.
And because I knew it was going to be cold out, I made a mental note to bring Amanda's panda hat to her.  She seemed pretty impressed.  I'm waiting on a picture of her wearing it, but here is the final product:
Again, because I know how much I procrastinate, I am beginning on my World of Warcraft costume this weekend.  Holy crap, right?  I don't expect to get much done over the weekend, but it would be nice to draft the patterns for my armor.  After the gym, I went by my favorite store, Hobby Lobby, and picked up some craft foam to try the armor method I previously shared.  It was $1.25 for two large sheets of foam; I bought two so that I could try and Zach could try also.  (Plus, margin for error...)  I don't plan on doing the entire process, but I at least want to try to cut and shape it.  Regardless of the results, I will post pictures of them.  My uncles and I worked out a few ideas for how to make different pieces tonight.  It's going to rock face, hehe.

Yes. It's going to be a good year.

WoW Armor :: Redux

So, our private server is launching a Cataclysm server at the beginning of February.  Along with the question of what race and class I am going to play (since my guild decided they wanted Worgens...lame), a new question arises:  Do I want to continue with Asynlynn as she is now, or use some of the best in slot Cataclysm armor?  Some of the armor in each set is aesthetically pleasing, so I decided that I would try mixing and matching a little of each to see how it looked.

This is what I have dubbed "Asynlynn Mix and Match."  I have taken some of the Cataclysm armor and some of the Wrath of the Lich King armor.  I have to admit that the Cataclysm armor does seem as if it would be a good bit easier to make.  The main difference is the color schemes, in my opinion.  The BiS weapon and shield that are in Cataclysm were actually considered less than the weapon and shield that I have equipped.  I had used the Cataclysm BiS weapons for quite some time in Wrath of the Lich King, so I would really like to do the ones I have equipped.  Also, the cloak that I had just upgraded from is considered BiS in Cataclysm, but again, I find the one I have now more aesthetically pleasing.  I know that the chest piece is not as important because it is hidden behind the guild tabard, but I decided to keep the one that I have equipped because the new one looks like it's outlining the boobs; Zach said it resembled headlights.

The equipped gear is as follows:
As it stands, I'm not sure that I really want to bother with the necklace and rings, but if I have time to do so, I will try them.  The hardest part of the costume, I believe is going to be the Blood Elf features such as the ears and the eyebrows.  (Not to mention losing weight.)  I lucked out and found official Blizzard Blood elf ears for $13; they look a little bulky and masculine, though.  I may attempt to make these ears out of leather if I can find the time and materials for it; I like these because they look a little more feminine.  I also saw a tutorial that showed how to make Blood Elf eyebrows with floral wire, superglue, and paper.

My next amazing find was how to make cheap armor that, in my opinion, looks pretty amazing.  I happened across this link on a cosplay website while searching for armor materials.  It uses craft foam for the most part, and easily found, inexpensive materials.  This is so very lucky for me because my character is a plate wearer and I did not want something incredibly hot, bulky, or difficult.  Here is an example of her armor:

I was super excited to find this.  It has a beautiful effect, while still being light, flexible, and cheap!  I am going to try to make the bulk of my armor out of this material and anything that involves being shaped (such as the shoulders) out of Styrofoam and covered with a material that has been undecided at the moment.

I already decided how I am going to pull of Precious' Ribbon.  It is hardly seen and basically a fancy tank-top (Get it?  Tank-top? Haha?)  It just so happens that I have a pink tank-top.  One piece of armor already taken care of.

The next items I would like to focus on are the cloth pieces.  This would be the tabard and the cloak (which I love).  A quick Google image search for "lion crest" resulted in many lions that suited our tabard wonderfully.  After playing around in Fireworks for a few minutes, I created the image on our tabard.  Granted our lions don't have wings, but Zach and I thought it looked good that way also.  When I posted it to our forums, I discovered that there were a few flaws in them, which I will edit out soon.  The size is approximately the length of a sheet of printer paper in landscape.

I'm just going to use black ribbon on the dark red fabric.  As much as I would like to have the lions embroidered or something that looks a little more professional, I think an iron-on transfer will work just as well.

I am excited to get started, but school starts soon as well, so that may hinder things a bit.  Lok'tar ogar!
